STATE COMPTROLLER PETER FRANCHOT DISCUSSES STATE BUDGET ISSUES WITH STEERING COMMITTEE

On Sunday, July 22nd, Peter Franchot met with 14 members of the Progressive Neighbors steering committee to discuss progressive solutions to the budget crisis. The committee reviewed the Progressive Neighbors Legislative Agenda, highlighting our group's support for making the state income tax progressive and making corporations pay their fair share and opposition to slots. Franchot, who said he had reviewed the Agenda, indicated his support for these positions and explained why he feels opposition to slots is critical. He stated that Maryland can create a higher road to economic development for its residents than that offered by gambling and slots. He said once slots are defeated it will open up greater opportunities for more progressive programs and measures and urged PN to join with other state groups that are fighting slots.

The productive session followed similar issue-oriented meetings the steering committee has held with State Senator Jamie Raskin and County Council Members Marc Elrich and Valerie Ervin.
